. . . a special day tucked away
in your long-ago memory.
Little girls in white dresses
hair tumbling in curls . . .
giggling and laughing
as in the attic they whirled.
Sipping cups of honey tea
with their very best friends . . .
a tattered bear named Matilda,
a calico cat they called Ben.

Here in the attic
where they would have tea.
Each could be anyone
they wanted to be.
Slivers of sunlight danced from
intricate designs.
The artist, a spider . . .
who'd left them behind.

Dressed for afternoon tea,
wearing Grandma's old hat
it was just wondrous sharing
tea with that calico cat.
And Matilda the bear looked
especially lovely that day . . .
She must have sensed
you just couldn't stay.
In your bed as you'd plan these
marvelous feasts . . .
you would be so excited,
you just couldn't sleep.
The trunks and boxes filled with
such marvelous things . . .
You could even return to the time
of princesses and kings.

When was the last time
you had Matilda to tea?
Did I hear you say,
"But I'm too old, not me!"
Matilda is waiting for
your next invitation.
It's easy you know . . .
all you need is your 'Imagination' . . .
You haven't lost it!
It's still there waiting for you.
So are Ben and Matilda . . .
so what will you do?
Will you miss Afternoon Attic Tea
with your very best friends?
Will you let it race past you . . .
still once again?

The key to your heart,
the truth of your dreams . . .
are the wondrous delights
'Imagination' can bring.
Use the key to your heart . . .
and I know where you'll be.
Up in the attic with Matilda . . .
having Afternoon Tea.
